Welcome to Chumkriel Language School

What is CLS?

CLS is a subsidized evening school that teaches English to approximately 250 students in the Chumkriel Commune of Kampot province, Cambodia. The school opened in October 2005. In September 2007 the school sought official recognition from Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. A copy of the Ministry's authorisation letter is available here [PDF]

Its aim is to offer a high quality of English language education in a developing rural area where students can benefit greatly from English language skills. The schools only agenda is to help improve the future of Cambodian children through access to good education. It has no religious or political affiliation. CLS has an active Scholarship Program and works closely with the Commune Council to identify vulnerable students who otherwise would not be able to participate in English language learning.

CLS is subsidized by charitable donations so that it can offer education services and support exceeding the norm. Money given to help the school goes directly to help the school. There is no large bureaucracy or hidden costs, all foreigners assisting (advisors, website administrator and volunteer teachers) are unpaid.

The school has an active volunteer program which gives the students access to native speakers. No teaching experience is necessary to help and no fees are charged to help the school. Over the last two years the school has had many volunteers, some spending over a month teaching - many forging strong links with the school, the staff and students and supporting it in its future.

The school is constantly seeking to improve itself by seeking advice and assistance from other schools, forging links with the local community, and working with the educational authorities and NGO's working in Cambodia.

Chumkriel commune was chosen for the location of the school as there is no evening school in the area.
