Chumkriel Language School - People

Mr Thy (Director)

Mr Thy (pronounced Mr. Tea) is the Cambodian director of the school. He has taught English in Cambodia for many years and started the school in November 2005, and appealed for foreign volunteers to come to help via the owner of a local geusthouse (Little Garden Bar).

Neil Mackenzie (Foreign advisor 2005-2007)

Neil Mackenzie was the first volunteer to help the school, arriving in December 2005 for what he thought was one month volunteer teaching (as his third stop on a round the world trip of 20 countries). Neil saw that the school was doing great work, but due to low student fees and many free students it was losing money and in danger of collapse. Neil raised some funds from friends and family (about 3000 dollars) and set out to work every day with the director to improve the quality of the school and encourage more volunteers to come. As of December 2006 his one month has become one year and his round the world ticket has been thrown in the bin!

Sandy Mackenzie (Acting Foreign Advisor)

When Neil moved back to London for a few months in March 2007 his brother Sandy came out to Kampot to assist in his place. Sandy is focusing on fund raising to bring financial security to the Scholarship class and on general improvements to the school environment (e.g. lighting in the class rooms) and improving the eduactional quality in the school.

Sandy has also introduced daily computer classes for the children of Chumkriel. These are enthusiastically received and well attended by the children and in most cases is their first introduction to computers.
